Carolina Might Part Ways With Morgan

A disappointing story that I feel isn't really talked about much (save for a piece or two on ESPN) is the injury plagued career of former Miami Hurricane, Dan Morgan. The guy is a prototypical middle linebacker. He even looks the part. Dude is scary. However, since being drafted by the Carolina Panthers following the 2000 season, he has been plagued by a series of severe concussions.

Now it appears he might be a cap casualty, with rookie (and fellow Cane) Jon Beason having filled the Mike position admirably this past season. Unfortunately, it might be for the best. I don't know Dan, nor do I know what condition he is in, but I do know he has serious decisions to make about his future and his health.

Those concussions can lead to serious complications in the future, and we all know what a bad state the NFL pension plan is in. Actually, I suppose he is a player in the modern era, so hopefully his personal fortune will be able to take care of him once he hangs them up.

Regardless, its painful to see such a fantastic player slowed down by injury. Canes fans will remember Morgan's goal line INT of Chris Weinke in that famous Wide Right III game. Panthers fans likewise will never forget his sick 25-tackle performance in Super Bowl XXXVIII. Here's to hoping Dan can still play to the best of his abilities without further injury. Hey, if he gets cut, I know a certain team close to home that is in need of a LB or two.
