Kellen Winslow II, who recently made his first Pro Bowl thank to Antonio Gates' injury, has publicly stated his desire for a new contract.
I'm not entirely sure how his original deal was changed after his surgeries, but it couldn't have been very generous to Winslow. Paying a player with that kind of injury history is just too much of a risk for any franchise to take.
However, he has played at a high level since recovering from the injuries and now feels he deserves a new deal. It's a tricky situation because he still poses an injury risk and is already under contract until 2010. Still, Winslow is more of a receiver than he is a tight end, and WRs make a whole lot more money than TE's do.
If I were the Browns, I would think about restructuring the deal to include attainable and sizeable incentives for Winslow. Maybe a bit of a pay raise, but not enough so that that club will be protected in the case of another freak injury. That way, both sides will be happy if Kellen stays healthy and productive.
