History Will Have to Wait...

Until next season at least. The Miami Dolphins finally got their long awaited victory over the Baltimore Ravens yesterday, 22-16 in overtime. Greg Camarillo's long touchdown catch erased all fears that the Fins would become the first winless team since the NFL went to a 16 game schedule. The post-game celebration resembled one of a playoff victory, and the cynic inside me would usually laugh at that. However, the win was something the fans, the players, and the organization desperately needed.

Now the Dolphins can look to the future. This one win means nothing; it was a win, but the failures in the red zone and late game decisions again highlight what is wrong with this team. It's time to put the Cleo Lemon experiment to rest, he clearly isn't an NFL starter. John Beck needs to prove he is worth keeping around. That is, unless the front office has already given up on him, which I sincerely doubt. Cam Cameron has no reason to leave Lemon in. At this point his fate is probably sealed regardless of the outcome of the last two games. He is either coming back or he isn't.

Ironically, the Dolphins avoided history one week and now seek to make history the next. In 6 days time the hapless Fins will travel to face the undefeated Patriots as one of their final two challenges to a perfect regular season. Could we be looking at a cross between the 85 MNF game vs the Bears and the 2004 MNF game vs these same Pats? The latter game was the biggest upset in NFL history, representing the first time any team beat an opponent with 10 more victories. The former was probably the biggest regular season game of all time, with Marino's vaunted offense being the only reason the 85 Bears did not go undefeated. If by some reason the stars align and the Dolphins can beat New England next week, then we will have seen probably the biggest regular season upset in professional sports history.
