Some news from Traz Powell, as the Canes participated in their first Spring Scrimmage of the season. Both papers wrote up some recaps of the action. Read Manny's blog here and Shandel's recap here.
From what it looks like, we actually have some good quarterbacks. Granted, when they start playing for real, we might be looking at some interceptions and bad mistakes. But it is nice to see that Marve and Harris are accurate on their passes and that they are getting some nice timing down with the receivers that are on campus.
I'm glad to see DVD bulked up a bit and is looking like our best corner. Once Brandon Harris gets in here, we will see a big improvement in our DB play. I also like the fact Anthony Reddick is in the starting lineup for the time being. Randy Phillips is a solid safety in run support, but Reddick has shown he has special skills when he is healthy.
I'm excited to see our offensive line in action. Fox, Franklin and Figueroa are all drawing raves from onlookers. I am a little concerned about the lack of a solid starting center though. That might be the most important position on the line, especially if you can't get a good snap off.
Unfortunately, it looks like Sam Shields might be left behind if he doesn't step it up. Already, McKenzie and Johnson have been drawing most of the attention in camp. Leonard Hankerson has supposedly improved tremendously, and Kayne is still a solid threat (albeit dropping an open TD from Marve).
Hopefully the MNW guys will get acclimated to the college game quickly and start making an impact sometime soon. Some of them already are, with Johnson and Spence making plays on the field.
One last note: I think we should all keep a close eye on Allen Bailey the next couple of seasons. The guy is a beast and in his first month playing DE he is already blowing people up. I can't wait to see him knock the crap out of Tim Tebow. Tough news about Josh Holmes though. There are rumors that he is done for the season.
