Yesterday the Dolphins began the process of rebuilding their gutted coaching staff by hiring former Arkansas coordinator David Lee to become QB Coach. In case you find it strange that we would hire assistant coaches before a head coach, Lee is a Parcells guy who worked under him in Dallas. This is basically a preemptive move to just solidify the inevitable hire of Tony Sparano as the new head coach of the Dolphins.
What makes the situation interesting and potentially controversial is the fact that the Dolphins are supposed to follow the Rooney Rule of considering a minority candidate for the head coaching vacancy. Our candidate would have been Leslie Frazier of the Vikings, who came by yesterday for his interview. However, there are questions regarding the validity of the interview, considering Sparano will likely be offered the job when the time is right.
Frazier didn't seem fazed by the obvious bias of the front office towards Sparano, so it will probably not result in any investigation or sanctions or anything like that. However, the whole process is raising a few red flags. Hopefully Sparano is the right guy for the job and can settle in as soon as possible and begin the long rebuilding phase we are looking at.
